In partnership with Apopo we are introducing syntropic agroforestryon in the western part of the Uluguru mountains, targeting 125 farmers. These mountains form Tanzania’s most critical watershed, supplying water to more than ten million people.
As soil erodes and its fertility continues to decline, farmers face economic pressures, since most of the land has been already deforested, without more land to expand. This is as well amplified through the rapid increase in population. As a consequence farmers currently use more chemicalfertilizers and this increases soil degradation and reduces the Uluguru Mountains’ ability to function as a sustainable water catchment. Protecting this watershed is therefore of great importance not only for local communities but also for the millions downstream who depend on a stable and clean water supply. Implementing resilient, biodiverse farming system, like syntropic agroforestry, offers a pathway to preserve these vital natural assets while improving the livelihoods of the small holder farmers
