Mgeta Livelihood Development Foundation (MLDF) originated from a
single initiative responding to the HIV/AIDS crisis in 2010, driven by concern
for the socio-economic conditions of orphaned children in Mgeta. The
Mgeta Orphan Education Fund (MOEF) was established and registered as a
Community-Based Organization (CBO) in 2013 in Mvomero District to help
orphaned children access both basic and vocational education. Groups of
orphans were trained in dairy goat rearing to enable them to meet their
basic needs.
After realizing that helping orphans alone was not sustainable, the foundation
extended its services to the families supporting these children: it
provided training in agriculture and dairy goat keeping to improve their
livelihoods.
In 2024, due to the expansion of its target audience from orphan families
to the entire farming community, MOEF transitioned into the Mgeta
Livelihood Development Foundation (MLDF): it is now registered under
the Non-Governmental Organization Act, 2002, with registration No.
00NGO/R/5184.
Today, MLDF collaborates with farmer groups, schools, village governments,
and other like-minded organizations to holistically promote sustainable
development in Mgeta. In general, MLDF works with communities
so they have the power, resources, and opportunities they need to survive
and thrive in their place.
MLDF currently has a network of over 700 farmers and 12 schools (both
primary and secondary) across 28 villages in Mvomero District.
